Get to Know Retinal Floaters: Origins and Treatment Options

Retinal floaters are small, shadowy shapes that move across your field of vision, often appearing as spots, threads, or cobweb-like structures. They occur when tiny clumps of gel or cells form in the vitreous, the jelly-like substance inside the eye. As the vitreous diminishes with age, these clumps cast shadows on the retina, creating the appearance of floaters. Although floaters are frequent and generally benign, they can be irritating and annoying.

In most cases, floaters are non-threatening and don’t require medical intervention. However, if you experience a quick increase in floaters, flashes of light, or a loss of peripheral vision, it could signal a more serious issue, such as retinal detachment. Early diagnosis is essential for preserving your vision and preventing potential complications. At Eye Center South, our retina specialists use cutting-edge diagnostic tools to carefully examine the health of your retina and recommend appropriate treatments. While many floaters become less noticeable over time, in some cases, laser treatment or vitrectomy may be necessary for more severe cases.
